Excelsior Mill Site

This industry started in the late 1800's as the North River Excelsior Manufacturing Company, making packing material from poplar and white birch wood.  It's low moisture content made it suitable for packing steel goods and the GE Company was the main buyer.
The mill was converted from steam to diesel power in the early 1920's with the 90kw generator shown here. This engine was made by Anderson and was a two cycle design putting out 180 hp.
The company went out of business in the early 1930's and reformed under the name Empire Excelsior Company. In 1934 it became the Adirondack Maple Block Co.
